out in meroe and the pyramids

The old Kushite Capital of Meroe is a little over 30 KM north of Shendi. The was occupied by the Kushites from around the fall of the 25th Dynasty in Egypt and had been a residence of the king, but sprung to prominence when the royal tombs were moved here from Nuri further down the Nile in around 270 BC. The remains of the Royal City are more archaeologically significant than visually impressive, and casual visitors may happily choose to give them a miss. The star attraction is the Royal Cemetery – better known as al Ahram or the Pyramids,
